About

We make theatre and technology that enlivens places for people. We value curiosity, integrity and adventure.

We are writers, coders, performers, designers, directors, and tinkerers. We use digital and theatrical tools like locative media, live performance, augmented reality, virtual production, new writing, and script development to foster social ties between people and place.

We work from Dharug Country in Parramatta, Australia.

Background

Voxstep began in 2021, growing out of a series of small-scale digital performance experiments initiated through a Cultural Fellowship with the City of Parramatta. Led by Nick Atkins, these early works explored trust, belonging, and how technology can reshape our experience of public space.

Since then, the practice has expanded with support from the City of Parramatta, and the NSW and Commonwealth Governments. Voxstep (formerly Operated Coin) premiered its first major work, Message Bank, in Parramatta Square for Sydney Festival 2023. We’ve since collaborated with a local school to adapt Message Bank into a campus-wide scavenger hunt (Green Thumb), partnered with FORM Dance Projects on the audio installation Lost. Stories. Found. for the reopening of Parramatta Town Hall, and worked with The Joan in Penrith to stage Ghost as a foyer-based story experience. In 2024, Voxstep returned to Parramatta Square with Dancing Bear, shifting from locative media to a hybrid, real-time performance networked through WhatsApp.

This work, and our broader inquiry into mobile and locative media performance, has been recognised internationally, featuring at ISEA (Brisbane & Seoul), the International Conference on Motion and Computing (Utrecht), SXSW Sydney, and Creative Australia’s ProtoX emerging company incubator.
